There are no definitive answers here one can simply hit the little button to restart the cycle if the first result wasn’t what they were expecting. But at the same time, it’s strangely comforting. As long as folks are taking Instagram roulettes for a spin, why not make them as absurd as possible? After all, this pointless trend is, I hope we all agree, radically stupid. What kind of Disney character are you? Which Friends character are you? Which democratic presidential candidate are you? What MTA train line are you? What item on the Cheesecake Factory menu are you? That last one doesn’t exist-yet-but it might as well. But the fun doesn’t stop at Pocket Monsters.

Since then, I now expect-and almost need-to see the look of dead-eyed anticipation on my friends’ faces when I tap on their little round avatars at the top of the app as they try new versions of the “What Pokémon Are You?” filter. I can’t tell a Metapod from a Geodude, but that didn’t stop me from trying it myself and promptly forgetting the result. Some of them were people I knew liked Pokémon, but more than a few were non-gamers who were simply curious enough to have an app tell them something they didn’t really need to know. Friends of mine started posting selfie videos with the game’s animated characters flipping above their heads like a Las Vegas slot machine. My eyes remained pretty much the same size, but the filter slimmed out my face and lips a notable amount, which made my eyes look larger than usual.I’m not exactly sure how this trend began, but on my own feed it started with Pokémon.

“While a clearer, smoother complexion is obvious, the filter also narrowed out my nose and made my brows appear fuller and darker. It makes me look like an anime character, and I really like my natural eyes. But, the eyes-that’s where I draw the line. It also narrows my nose a tiny bit, which I don’t mind. It hides any and all signs of discoloration, which is huge for me because melasma is a struggle. The big draw for me is the difference it makes on my skin. “I’ll be the first to admit that I love using this filter, especially when I have little to no makeup on-it makes you look awake and perfectly put together even when you’re the furthest thing from it. It’s a pretty strong filter though-and while it looks great, it makes me think that it doesn’t help with the already unrealistic standards of what we should look like.”

The rosy tint also makes everything look more youthful and helps a lot with skin that otherwise can look sallow.

“The beauty filter smooths fine lines, evens skin tone, adds glow and highlights and contours all in one step. Intrigued by the story that went viral last month about Laverne Cox using the “beauty” filter, we decided to analyze the effects on our own faces, and some of the results were pretty eye-opening. You May Also Like: This Simple Makeup Trick Looks Like a Snapchat Filter on Your Face The app’s “beauty” filter in particular-it basically gives you a flawless complexion with the tap of one button-makes us look so good, that when we swipe back to normal mode, we’re left with this “why can’t I look like that all the time?” feeling. Because we’re constantly seeing ourselves “ filtered,” is there a chance we could feel a little bit let down when we see the real thing? I’m leaning toward yes, although it’s a somber realization. Snapchat brings about a ton of laugh-til-it-hurts fun-seeing my friend’s baby in the grandma filter really set the bar high-but we can’t help but think that it also has its potential drawbacks.
